The Fourth Sunday of Epiphany 2022

Third Day after Epiphany

January 23, 2022

Dear Friend,

Today at our annual meeting we said fairwell – and a great thank-you – to John and Patty Lund for their servanthood on our council. We welcomed Ron Johnson to our council, and Lisa Dunaway to the position of treasurer. AND – I am so proud of Calvary for major increases in our benevolence – the offerings we give to Rockford Area Lutheran Ministry, Katie’s Cup, our Northern Illinois Synod – and our continuing offering to Five Gates Church. We can never outgive God – and I am SO grateful for what we give.

-God loves you and so do I – Pastor Chuck

P.S. Today we brought Joe Sartino and Diane Ostebee into our family. They are our first new members since we’ve moved into our chapel. Do welcome them!

The Third Sunday of Epiphany 2022

Second Sunday after Epiphany

January 15, 2022

Dear Friend,

One of the most important things you can do is write a personal mission statement. It clarifies who and what you are. It directs your future.  So what is my personal mission?

My mission is to teach, encourage and practice CARE.

So this is one of the happiest times of my life - to care for Anne, Izzy, Annabelle, you, fifty dying people in Northern Illinois Hospice, and the homebound of St. Mark Lutheran - as well as my therapy clients.

SO – what exactly is Jesus’ mission statement? Come this Sunday and discover the heart and mind of Jesus.

-God loves you and so do I – Pastor Chuck

P.S. This Sunday we’ll bring Joe Sartino and Diane Ostebee into our family. They will be our first new members since we’ve moved into our chapel. Do welcome them!

The Second Sunday of Epiphany 2022

First Sunday after Epiphany

January 9, 2022

Dear friend,

Water he turns into wine, opens the eyes of the blind, there’s no one like him… Chris Tomlin sings in Our God is Greater.

Epiphany is a wonderful time of the year! Jesus appears in the world, and then he appears at a wedding, and at a seashore to call men to become Fishers of Men. He appears in a synagogue to reveal his Mission: bringing sight to the blind, freeing the captive, healing. What a wonderful savior!

Isn't it time to make your commitment to him new? One spiritual step can be so simple: add a quiet time to your day, worship, share a good word with someone who needs Jesus. This Epiphany, come closer to Jesus.

-God loves you and so do I – Pastor Chuck

Epiphany 2022

January 6, 2022

Dear Friend –

Kings guided by a star to the newborn King. This King growing – and calling to follow Him. The king is launched!

THAT’S the season called Epiphany – epiphanos, the Bible’s Greek word for appearance. Jesus is appearing now – the new beginning.

Begin this year with praise – The Wise Men do.

-God loves you and so do I – Pastor Chuck

P.S. Yesterday I began Day by Day with Martin Luther in my early-morning quiet time with the Lord. It’s easy to understand, and VERY practical.

.Here’s part of today’s entry.

Keep watch! Study! Attend to Reading!

Truly, you cannot read in Scripture too much,

And what you do read you cannot read too well,

And what you read well you cannot understand too well,

And what you understand well, you cannot teach too well…

PLEASE keep his words as your 2022 mission: Keep watch! Study! Attend to reading!

Here I Am to Worship

Matthew 5:1-12

New Revised Standard Version

The Beatitudes

5 When Jesus[a] saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely[b] on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next.
Amen.
